Pete Burns shot to fame as the lead singer in 1980s pop band Dead or Alive. Their single 'You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)' reached number one on the UK singles chart and the top twenty in the US. Throughout his career Burns embraced his queer identity, exploring queer themes in his music. MTV banned the video for Dead or Alive's single 'I'll Save You All My Kisses' due to its queer content; the video featured Burns dressed in tights and a leather jacket dancing on a baseball diamond while shirtless men crowded around a chain-link fence, starling longingly at him. Later in life, Burns played with his gender presentation, altering his appearance through cosmetic surgery. In his lifetime he was married twice, once to Lynne Corlett and then once holding a civil partnership with Michael Simpson. Of his identity and presentation Burns commented, '[People always want to know – am I gay, bi, trans or what? I say, forget all that... I'm just Pete.'
